Before starting large-scale data collection, SOWtrack will conduct a pilot study to test and refine its protocol.
In this phase, assessors will visit a small number of farms in three countries, covering different production systems. They will apply the draft protocol, collect data, and provide feedback on what works well and what needs adjustment. The pilot study will ensure that the final protocol is:
Feasible: visits can be completed in a reasonable time without disruption to farm routines.
Consistent: measures can be applied in the same way across countries and farming systems.
Reliable: indicators give clear, repeatable results.
A central training programme will ensure that all evaluators understand the methods and can apply them with high consistency.
Farmers involved in the pilot will receive feedback on their results and have the opportunity to comment on the process. Their input will help fine-tune the protocol so that it is practical for use on other farms.
