Frequently asked questions

What is SOWtrack?

SOWtrack is a European project, funded by EFSA, to develop a harmonised way of assessing the welfare of sows and piglets on farms.

A trained assessor will spend half a day on your farm. They will make non-invasive observations of animals and housing conditions. Farm routines will not be disrupted.

No special preparation is required. If you wish, you may share basic health or production records, but this is optional.

No. Every farm receives a unique code. Your name, address, and contact details are kept separate and never shared.

All data are handled under GDPR rules. Information is anonymised and encrypted before being shared with EFSA. Your identity will never appear in reports, publications, or databases.

  • Confidential benchmarking feedback comparing your results with anonymised averages
  • Compensation for hosting the visit
  • The opportunity to contribute to science and policy on animal welfare

By joining, you:

  • Help create the first EU-wide database on sow and piglet welfare
  • Ensure future EU policies reflect real farm data
  • Gain confidential insights about your own farm

The project is coordinated by the University of Helsinki, with partners in 10 European countries, including universities, research institutes, and animal welfare experts.
