What is SOWtrack?
SOWtrack is a European project, funded by EFSA, to develop a harmonised way of assessing the welfare of sows and piglets on farms.
What will happen during a farm visit?
A trained assessor will spend half a day on your farm. They will make non-invasive observations of animals and housing conditions. Farm routines will not be disrupted.
Do I need to prepare anything?
No special preparation is required. If you wish, you may share basic health or production records, but this is optional.
Will my farm be identified?
No. Every farm receives a unique code. Your name, address, and contact details are kept separate and never shared.
How is my data protected?
All data are handled under GDPR rules. Information is anonymised and encrypted before being shared with EFSA. Your identity will never appear in reports, publications, or databases.
What do I get in return?
- Confidential benchmarking feedback comparing your results with anonymised averages
- Compensation for hosting the visit
- The opportunity to contribute to science and policy on animal welfare
Why should I take part?
By joining, you:
- Help create the first EU-wide database on sow and piglet welfare
- Ensure future EU policies reflect real farm data
- Gain confidential insights about your own farm
Who is carrying out the project?
The project is coordinated by the University of Helsinki, with partners in 10 European countries, including universities, research institutes, and animal welfare experts.
