Farmers are central to the success of SOWtrack. Each farm visit will be completed in half a day and will involve non-invasive observations of sows and piglets.
Benefits for farmers:
Confidential benchmarking: Participating farms will receive feedback comparing their results (anonymised) with averages from other farms.
Support for the sector: By contributing data, farmers help create the first harmonised EU-wide welfare database, strengthening the sector’s voice in future policy decisions.
Compensation: A small sum is available in recognition for the time involved in hosting a visit.
Data protection and security:
All personal data will be managed according to GDPR rules.
Data will be anonymised and encrypted before sharing with EFSA.
Farmers’ and farm identities will never be disclosed in reports or analyses.
Participation is voluntary, and the project team will work closely with local partners to ensure smooth communication and practical arrangements.
Taking part in SOWtrack means farmers get trusted feedback, secure data management, and a direct role in shaping animal welfare policy and assessment across Europe.
